Passengers flying from Newcastle Airport can book Covid pre-departure tests to get everything free of the virus before traveling.
The testing facility will be available from December 1 with a £ 99 PCR swab, compared to £ 80 in Edinburgh and £ 60 in Gatwick.
Newcastle is working with local companies NPH Group and MDNA Life Sciences to provide the PCR tests and, if possible, rapid antigen and antibody tests.
Many destinations now require passengers to give a negative PCR result and it is hoped that the newly formed service will provide passengers with a cost-effective, reliable and convenient service prior to their travel.
The test facility will be located in the ‘Premium Meet and Greet’ car park and the service is backed by a state-of-the-art testing laboratory within easy reach of the airport, meaning results can be quickly converted.
Richard Knight, Newcastle Airport’s chief operating officer, said: “Spain, the Canary Islands and several other destinations require passengers to have a negative PCR Covid-19 test no more than 72 hours prior to arrival.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for our passengers to travel to their destination. As such, we have worked hard to establish a relationship with two highly experienced and well-regarded local companies with Covid-19 testing facilities.
“Unlike post tests, the tests provided by NPH Group and MDNA Life Sciences are administered by trained clinicians, reducing the likelihood of an unclear result. Passengers can receive their certified result within 36-48 hours, allowing them to travel to their chosen destination if negative. “
Mark Philpott, CEO of NPH Group, said: “We are proud to partner with Newcastle Airport to make COVID-19 testing accessible, affordable and reliable for all travelers.
“We have worked hard to make the PCR test as easy as possible for passengers. People can easily visit our website to book a test at a date and time that suits them. They can then arrive for their test and receive their results by email within 36-48 hours.
“MDNA has a state-of-the-art laboratory in the center of Newcastle that is equipped to the Category 2 biological safety standard. They are licensed by the UK Human Tissue Authority and have testing procedures that meet the ISO 15189: 2012 standard required for quality and competence in medical laboratories.
“It’s great to be able to provide this service to the airport and help them get people back on the air.”
