Art Attack presenter shuts down rumours that he is Banksy

Art Attack presenter Neil Buchanan has shut down a viral theory on social media that he is the man behind elusive street artist Banksy.

A fan theory suggests that the artist, who presented children’s TV shows Art Attack and Finders Keepers in the 1990s, is the person responsible for a number of famous artworks over the years, including Balloon Girl, Well Hung Lover, Devolved Parliament and Port Talbot’s own Seasons Greetings.

Responding to the theory on social media, one person wrote: “Just heard that it’s rumoured Neil Buchanan is Banksy.

“If true, it’s the funniest s*** ever.”

He added: “He’s a musician and art has followed in the cities of shows he’s done allegedly.

“This is straight in the believe without question category.”

The rumour went viral over the weekend, with another person writing: “The fact that there‚Äôs a huge rumour going round that Art Attack legend, Neil Buchanan, is actually Banksy is one of the only good things to have happened this year.”

Another Twitter user commented: “I am now fully committing to this. it’ll be a cold day in hell when I am convinced otherwise.”

A fourth person said: “They say not to believe everything you read online but I 100% believe this. Don’t even need to look up the cities for confirmation. Neil is Banksy, Banksy is Neil.”

But to the disappointment of many, Neil Buchanan’s official website released a statement on Monday denying the Banksy claim in full.

They wrote: “Neil Buchanan is NOT Banksy.

“PLEASE NOTE: We have been inundated with enquiries over the weekend regarding the current social media story.

“Unfortunately this website does not have the infrastructure to answer all these enquiries individually, however we can confirm that there is no truth in the rumour whatsoever.”

It added: “Neil spent lockdown with vulnerable members of his family and is now preparing to launch his new art collection in 2021.

“Thank you and please stay safe.”
