Baby among five dead as car ploughs into pedestrians in Germany

At least five people, including a nine-month-old baby, are dead and 15 others injured after a car in a pedestrian zone in a German city ‘deliberately’ plows against them.

Witnesses in Trier, in the southwest of the country, said a dark gray Range Rover had randomly collided with people.

The 4×4 raced through a pedestrian zone at an estimated speed of 40 mph, also killing a 72-year-old woman.

The city’s tearful mayor told reporters that a young girl was among the dead.

The driver of the car – a 51-year-old German man living in the area – was arrested in a dramatic destruction when police stopped the vehicle on a nearby street.

Investigators think he was drunk and say there is no evidence it is a terrorist attack.

Photos posted online show a body covered in tarpaulin on a pedestrian street decorated with Christmas lights, while a video clip shows an injured man on the floor next to a shop as witnesses called for help.

“Our thoughts are with the relatives of the victims, with the many injured, and with all those who are now on duty to care for those affected.”

The incident took place at a time of year when German cities and towns are usually busy organizing Christmas markets.

Trier is located in the Moselle wine region, near the border of Germany and Luxembourg.

The city has a population of just over 110,000 and is located about 160 kilometers west of Frankfurt.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “There are reports that a car has run into a crowd in the city of Trier, in southwest Germany.

‘There have been a number of victims. You have to stay vigilant and follow the instructions of the local authorities to avoid the area. ‘

Germany has tightened the security of pedestrian areas across the country since a truck attack on a Christmas market in Berlin in 2016 that killed 12 people and injured dozens.
