An 11-year-old boy was gunned down and killed after being shot in the head.
Davon McNeal had been celebrating 4th of July in southeast Washington DC, the US, with his family when shots rang out amid the fireworks display.
As his family enjoyed a BBQ, Davon had stopped by the home to pick up some items for his mobile phone.
It was during this time, around 9.20pm on Saturday, that Davon was shot in the head.
Emergency services raced to the city’s Cedar Street and took him to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Officers combed the area following the shooting, searching for the weapon used in the shooting or any other clues.
No arrests have been made at this time.
Following the shooting, Davon’s grandad Tony Lawson spoke to the media and told them about Davon’s love of American football and called for an end to gun violence.
Fighting back the tears, Mr Lawson said: “He was a good kid. I mean, his life gone. 11-years-old, he hadn’t lived his life yet, 11-years-old. We got to stop killing each other. Stop it. Put the guns down.
“Parents you know your son out. You know what your kids out here doing. If you know, stop ‘em. Stop ‘em before they hurt somebody else.
“Just stop it, stop it, please stop it.”
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted following the death and said: “A mother lost her 11-year-old son to gunfire tonight. My thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family.”
She then called on people to “help find those responsible for his murder”.
The DC Police Department later asked for anyone with information to call +1 (202) 727-9099.
