Boy, 6, left 'home alone' for days 'heating own food and dangling from balcony'

The parents of a six-year-old child have been arrested after leaving him alone at home for several days, police say.

The boy was spotted perched on the balcony railings of the family’s fourth floor flat in Valencia, Spain.

The youngster was found wearing just his underwear and had been watching cartoons and feeding himself.

The couple now face prosecution for the crime of child abandonment.

“The boy was found by the agents when he was perched on the balcony railing, on the fourth floor, looking out onto the street with risk to his life and without the supervision of any adult,” said a police spokesman.

His parents, aged 25 and 26, are also charged with a crime against industrial property as when police got into the house, they found that they had a large amount of counterfeit objects of well-known brands.

They admitted they had intended to sell them.

The pair were caught out when a police patrol was called out to a flat following report of a young child on a balcony and in danger of falling from the railings.

They were told he had been alone for days.

Officers who rushed to the scene saw the youngster on the balcony and hammered on the front door in a bid to get to him as quickly as possible.

From inside, the police reported, they could hear the sound of cartoons on the television.

They then heard a child calling out and the youngster himself opened the door once he was told it was the police.

The six-year-old was reported to have been “shaking and scared”.

He told the officers there was no-one else inside and he had been there for days but did not know exactly how long.

Police verified that no one was in the home, observing it was in an untidy state and food remains as the boy had apparently heated the food himself.

They also located in two rooms of the house a large quantity of counterfeit items, mostly slippers, from various well-known brands.

A police spokesman said they were able to locate the boy’s grandmother by phone and she was “visibly angry” when she found out he had been left alone and claimed it was “not the first time.”

The man and woman, who have been placed in the hands of the courts, are apparently giving different versions of what happened and dispute who was supposed to be looking after the boy.
