Boy shot dead ‘running naked from sex offender' left note at suspect's home

A boy who was allegedly shot dead as he ran naked from a convicted sex offender reportedly left a note at the suspect’s home which began: “If you’re reading this, I’m dead.”

Kyan King, 16, died on August 30 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The suspect in the shooting – 45-year-old Orlando Duarte – was allegedly seen by witnesses chasing the boy near the corner of the city’s 18th and Forster streets.

Duarte is now facing charges of criminal homicide and prohibited possession of a firearm.

A Harrisburg police report says that around 1 pm on Saturday, August 30, officers responded a report of a naked person crying for help before being shot by someone in an orange shirt.

Upon arrival at the scene, the officers were met by several witnesses who told pointed them in the direction that the suspect had fled.

Police say they quickly spotted Duarte, who ran from them but tripped, dropping a 22 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol which matched the calibre of shell casing found at the scene of the alleged shooting.

When interviewed, witnesses said that Kyan had claimed he had been raped before escaping from his alleged abuser, and more than one eyewitness claimed to have seen Duarte firing the fatal shots.

Another witness told police he had seen the boy at Duarte’s apartment in the 600 block of North 17th Street earlier that day.

Upon searching the apartment officers found more bullets matching the presumed murder weapon as well as the heartrending note from Kyan, according to PennLive.com

Duarte has a long history of sexual offences against children – being sentenced in 2012 to four to eight years in jail and 10 years probation after being found guilty of deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child, aggravated indecent assault without consent, indecent assault of a person less than 13, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors.

He was released from State Correctional Institute Camp Hill in May 2018, and added to Pennsylvania’s “Megan’s Law” register and is listed as a lifetime sex offender.

He is set to face a preliminary hearing on September 28.
