A mum suspected of killing five of her children left her eldest son on a train before trying to kill herself, it has been reported.
The 27-year-old woman, named as Christiane K in German media, is suspected of killing five of her six children in Solingen.
The children are three girls aged one and a half, two and three years old, and two boys – Luca, eight, and Timo, six.
Police believe that they were killed with some kind of pills, RTL reported.
Their bodies were found in the family’s flat in Solingen by police.
A sixth child, 11-year-old Marcel, rode on a train with his mother following the killings, RTL reported.
She got off at Düsseldorf Central Station and threw herself onto the tracks, police have said.
Marcel was left on the train to travel to Mönchengladbach to see his grandmother.
Police spokesman Stefan Weiand said of the killings: “At the moment, we assume that the 27-year-old mother was responsible.
“The mother threw herself in front of a train in Duesseldorf and is badly injured.
“At the moment she is being treated in hospital.”
Dozens of emergency service workers are present outside the family’s home.
Locals have been sitting outside the building in the rain in apparent shock at the horrific events.
North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul told RTL: “The family drama in Solingen fills me with great sadness, and at the moment I am with my thoughts and prayers with five small children who were torn from life so terribly early.”
Lord Mayor of Solingen, Tim Kurzbach, said afternoon: “Today is a day on which we in Solingen are very sad because something happened that struck us deeply.”
