California Baptist University tabs Ron Prettyman as interim athletic director

California Baptist University announced Wednesday that Ron Prettyman has been chosen the university’s interim athletic director. Prettyman will start in his new position September 28.

Prettyman brings more than 30 years of experience as an athletic director, having held that position at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa (1983-95), Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson (1995-2005) and Indiana State University (2005-15). Prettyman was honored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics as an Under Armour AD of the Year in 2004 and 2011.

“Ron Prettyman has a tremendous history of success for promoting athletic and academic excellence at multiple institutions,” Cal Baptist president Ronald Ellis said in a news release. “We are looking forward to having his advice and counsel on campus as we seek a permanent leader for Lancer athletics.”

Prettyman takes over for Micah Parker, who resigned in May after holding the athletic director position for 11 years. Parker now is the Vice President of Athletics at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa.

Prettyman takes over the athletic department with the university starting the third year of a four-year process of transitioning to the NCAA Division I level. Cal Baptist’s teams compete primarily in the Western Athletic Conference, and the Lancers already have won three WAC conference championship since the university started the transition.

“We are excited to have Ron help guide us as our institution and athletics department navigate through COVID-19 concerns as well as the NCAA Division I transition process,” Kent Dacus, Cal Baptist’s vice president for enrollment and student services, said in the release. “We are blessed to have somebody with Ron’s experience and expertise as we continue to move forward in meeting the vision put in place by Dr. Ellis.”

From 2016-18, Prettyman was the NCAA’s managing director of championships, overseeing 17 national championships including the College World Series, Division I football and women’s volleyball. Prettyman was primary liaison to the football oversight committee and worked with rules and officials functions for all sports at all NCAA levels, He also was responsible for certification of all college bowl games.
