A bulldozer driver feared to be Russia’s worst-ever rapist has been charged with two murders and multiple sex attacks dating back almost three decades.
Pyotr Shuvalov was describe by police as a “model family man” but now one of his victims has called for him to be castrated for the torment he put her through.
The 52-year-old who was married to a teacher and a father-of-two hid a secret, sinister life, police say.
Officers believe the “maniac” would leave his home and attack women at knifepoint, forcing them in to nearby semi-built buildings where he raped them.
The suspect has shown detectives how he attacked the women in a Russian Investigative Committee video.
He is accused of killing two women in his home town Tulun after realising they recognised him as the spouse of a well-known local teacher.
A police source alleged there is direct evidence of some 60 rapes, claiming additional known victims did not make official complaints despite suffering sex attacks.
His first alleged rape was in 1992, and there are fears of many more victims who have never revealed themselves, refusing to answer police appeals to come forward.
The committee has not disclosed how many charges of ‘rape’ and ‘violent acts of a sexual nature’ he will face at his upcoming trial.
It is known he has confessed to “dozens” of rapes for which there is also DNA or other convincing evidence, officers have revealed
One alleged victim claims she told police who he was in 2002 – and they took no action.
He raped her in a maternity hospital which was under construction.
“He caught up with me and pointed his knife to my throat,” she said.
“We came to that maternity hospital, went to the fourth floor, and he did what he did.
“Of course it was very scary, I thought he would throw me [out] because there was no wall on that floor.”
She added: “Give him to me now and I would castrate him myself. Honestly, my hands won’t shake.
“So many years have passed and I have always had this desire.”
Shuvalov was detained on another matter and when she reported the rape, she saw him at the police station.
“No one listened to us,” she said.
Another victim said: “There are girls who became insane after he attacked them.
“I simply want to kill him so that he doesn’t do it again.”
Many victims said their rapists “smelled of diesel” and former police investigator Artyom Dubynin admitted there had been a major failure in not apprehending the suspect until they realised the semen was from the same man in a dozen cases.
Blundering detectives had missed obvious clues and failed to believe victims, he said.
Several women said the alleged rapist “fell asleep on top of me and snored” after forcing them to have sex.
“He was pointing the knife to the throat of each of his victims so that the victim couldn’t fight back,” said Dubynin.
One of his final victims, aged just 16 when she was attacked, said: “I saw a man walking in front of me – it seemed to be the grandpa of my friend.
“He caught me, held me tight, knife to my throat…
“He told me not to scream or he would cut my throat.”
His family say they cannot believe he is the notorious “Tulun maniac” who struck fear in the remote town.
His “shocked” adult son said: “I don’t believe that my father could lead a double life.”
His daughter-in-law told Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda: “He is a kind, sweet man.
“Don’t you think his wife wouldn’t have suspected anything if he was committing crimes?
“We believe he will soon be cleared and we will forget it all as a bad dream.”
Some 15,000 men were subjected to DNA tests during the investigation.
In all, around 3,000 men were interrogated before the suspect was held.
