INGLEWOOD – Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen recently received a text message from his former attack coordinator Ken Whisenhunt to congratulate him on his latest performance this season.

Whisenhunt, who played for the Chargers during Allen’s rookie season, reminded Allen of his memorable Week 2 debut in 2013 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Allen had his first two catches of his career that day.

“You’ve just been a nail in the hammer since you came into Philly,” Allen said, paraphrasing Whisenhunt’s lines. He was also the Chargers’ offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2018.

Allen has come a long way since his debut. On Sunday, Allen set multiple records in the Chargers’ 34-28 win against the New York Jets at SoFi Stadium.

Allen became the fastest player to reach 600 career receipts with 96 career games played. He shares the record with Antonio Brown.

Allen also broke his own single-game franchise record with 16 receptions against the Jets. Allen’s previous record, which he shared with Austin Ekeler and Kellen Winslow Sr., was 15 catches in a match.

Allen registered 145 receiving yards with one touchdown and saw 19 goals from rookie quarterback Justin Herbert against the Jets.

“I have plenty of gas in the tank now,” said Allen, now in his eighth season. ‘I still feel like I’m young. I still feel like a young guy. And I’ll just keep chipping. ”

Allen, 28, is now at 605 career receptions, a week after he surpassed Hall of Famer Charlie Joiner for all-time runner-up on the Chargers’ scoreboard.

But the records didn’t stop there. Allen had his sixth career game with at least 13 catches, breaking Brown and Wes Welker’s five-game record.

Allen caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Herbert in the third quarter to give the Chargers a 31-13 lead.

“That was hot,” Allen said of Herbert’s bullet through the window.

Herbert added about the fast ball: “I think it is sometimes necessary (extra warmth on a pass). As heavy as it can be, you have to throw them into tight windows. The defender had his back to Keenan and I just rolled out knowing Keenan would look for more and his eyes would look up. He made a good game by shaking him off and catching the ball. ”

HAYWARD’S GAME

Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward has had a low season and his struggles continued on Sunday.

Hayward allowed a 49-yard touchdown to Breshad Perriman, along with other explosive plays.

“Casey needs to play the ball better,” Lynn said. ‘He’s in position. I’m sitting there watching some of these plays. He’s there with his husband, but he’s not coming down with the ball. That’s something we have to fix.

“We had a lot of 50-50 balls and they won most of those 50-50 balls and we have to be better in those situations.”

EXIT OF THE TURNER

Right guard Trai Turner left the game with an injury in the second half and was replaced by Cole Toner.

“I think Trai will be okay,” Lynn said. “I don’t think it was anything serious.”
