Couple married for 53 years die from coronavirus while holding hands

A husband and wife who had spent 53 years together as a married couple died from coronavirus while holding hands.

Akin to a scene out of the film “The Notebook,” Betty, 80, and Curtis Tarpley, 79, spent their life together and died spending their last moments holding hands.

The couple, who attended the same high-school more than 53 years ago died within an hour of each other on June 18, reports CNN.

After contracting coronavirus on June 9, Betty was admitted into hospital followed by her husband Curtis who was admitted two days later.

They were both admitted in Fort Worth, Texas, USA, after becoming sick for a few days.

Their son, Tim Tarpley, 52, revealed how Curtis was initially in ICU and recovering, before he was wheeled to Betty’s unit so the two could spend time with each other.

At this time, Betty’s condition was getting worse – she said to Tim and his sister that she was “ready to go.”

Tim said: “I just screamed ‘No!’ I was like, ‘I’ve got too much, too many other things to do in this life that I want to show you, and I’m not ready.'”

The son and daughter were able to visit Betty twice, however she looked uncomfortable and doctors warned she did not have much time, reports CNN.

Tim alerted his dad to Betty’s condition, when Curtis’ oxygen levels plummeted after the news.

“I really feel like he like he was fighting because he was supposed to and once he knew she wasn’t gonna make it, then he was okay with, you know, taking it to the house,” Tarpley said.

He added: “I think he fought because he thought the team needed him, but he was also tired and he was in pain.”

Eventually, a nurse brought the two together for comfort care – giving them high doses of medication to ease their pain.

With both in ICU, the couple were placed side-by-side with Betty’s hand on Curtis’ arm.

After about 20 minutes, Betty died. Curtis died 45 minutes later.
