A mother has been arrested after she tied and set her daughter’s hands on fire as punishment for stealing candy.
The shocking incident took place in the town of Cochabamba, Bolivia, after the young victim and her four-year-old sister stole from a local store.
It is said that the mother intended to do the same with the younger girl – but the little girl managed to run away.
The injured child’s mother and stepfather have since been arrested – although the mother was later released because she is six months pregnant.
The store owner complained to the children’s parents after seeing them steal candy on the camera images.
The 37-year-old mother, whose name has not been disclosed, reacted violently and “endangered the lives of her daughters,” said Ruben Dario Lobaton, director of the Cochabamba Special Force Against Violence.
He told news source Unitel: “The mother admitted that she tied straw to both girls’ arms as punishment.
“She set the elder sister’s hands on fire and the youngest girl, realizing what was going on, managed to escape.”
The six-year-old girl was seriously injured with second-degree burns to her arms and hands, but is in a stable condition in the hospital.
She will have to undergo at least four surgeries to restore mobility in her forearms and hands, as well as other treatments related to the possible psychological damage caused by the horrific incident.
Doctors warned that the recovery process could take several months or even a year as the injuries reach her elbows and that she can have functional and aesthetic consequences.
Her younger sister is in the care of social workers at the local child and youth protection center.
The mother said she was sorry and only wanted to teach the girls a lesson so they wouldn’t take other people’s belongings with them.
She swore, “I’m going to get my daughters back, I never thought it would go this far because I just wanted them to be scared, nothing else. It’s my commitment to be with my five children, to work and for them. to care.”
Both the mother and the stepfather have been arrested. A judge ordered the six-month-old pregnant mother to wait until she gave birth before going to trial.
The 32-year-old stepfather was arrested for being an accomplice when he witnessed the torture and did nothing to stop the mother.
He has been sent to preventive prison while the investigation continues.
