A father and daughter weighing more than 45 pounds combined after they bonded with fast food, switched their couch potato lifestyles to champion leaner – they throw 17 stones between them.
When former health care provider Beth Young, 28, developed chest pains as she struggled to get up from the couch in September 2019, that was the warning she needed to tackle her 24th size 28 frame.
Satisfied not only with tackling her own weight problem, three months after joining a weight-loss club, Hull, East Yorkshire mum, 21-pound dad, Pete Dowell, 55, a maintenance technician from nearby Beverley, whined about to join her.
Beth, a 14th 10lb size 16, who has a son, Rio, nine, with her electrical engineer husband, Gareth, 32, said, “I denied how much I weighed.
‘I stopped looking in mirrors and hid in pictures.
“I easily ate five takeaways a week and Daddy was just as bad.”
Supporting each other has not only strengthened their bond, but Pete is now only 13st 6lb and Beth has celebrated her accomplishment by becoming a newly qualified Slimming World weight loss consultant.
Recalling the wake-up call that changed her life, Beth said, “When I had chest pain trying to get up, I thought, ‘If I’m like this now, what will I look like in ten years? ‘
“Dad and I reached our target weights in October of this year.”
She continued: ‘He did so well too, I couldn’t be prouder.
‘I honestly don’t think I would have gotten to this point without him. He has been with me to celebrate the highs and pick me up from the lows.
“He’s been my biggest cheerleader.”
Beth’s own weight struggle began at the age of 17 when she was diagnosed with a blood clot.
After surgery to treat her atrial fibrillation – a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heartbeat – at Hull Royal Infirmary in 2009, Beth woke up just a week later and couldn’t move her legs.
“I had heart problems for two years,” she recalls. “My heart was beating so fast that my pulse and heart were visible through my skin.”
She continued, “At first, nobody took it very seriously, but eventually I was diagnosed and two weeks later underwent keyhole surgery.
“I woke up a week after the operation and my legs were swollen and dead. I called 999 and they told me to go to hospital immediately. “
Beth was diagnosed with a blood clot and spent eight days in the hospital, before needing another six months to recover from the ordeal.
“I wasn’t put on the bed, but I was told to take it easy,” she recalls. “It took me months to regain my energy levels.
‘Even up the stairs to the bathroom was hard work – I was out of breath.
“I had never been super thin before, but I wasn’t overweight until then.”
She continued: “I started eating all kinds of things, just out of boredom.
“I was emotional and had had enough. I just had dinner and dinner. “
With a whopping four stones in six months, by the time her blood clot had dissolved, Beth pushed the 20th and caught up with her dad, who for years tipped the scales at 21 4 pounds and dropped to a 45-inch and 22-inch waist. inch neckline bustle.
At age 24, Beth’s body mass index (BMI) used to measure a healthy weight was 47 compared to the NHS recommended range of 18.5 to 24.9, while her 6ft dad was 40.3 – making them both obese.
And while Beth admits they weren’t always close, they had a great shared bond – a love of high-calorie fast food.
“We were just as bad as each other,” she said.
Rather than taking action, Beth chose to stay indoors rather than put on her weight, even when piqued by thoughtless booing.
She said, “I must have been 22 or 23 when I stopped visiting the city.
“There’s only so many times a random guy can call you a ‘fat cow’ before you give up.”
But by the summer of 2019, plagued with aches, pains and palpations, it finally came to her that her weight posed a real threat to her health.
“I had trouble moving,” she said. “I couldn’t even dance half a song with Rio in the living room.
“I had no palpation since my surgery ten years earlier and I was terrified that something would go wrong again.”
She continued, “I would wake up and my joints would be in pain.”
So she joined her local Slimming World group in September 2019.
A bundle of nerves at her first meeting, she recalled, “It took a lot of courage to go.”
She continued, “I was the tallest person in the room and I just wanted to run.
Then one of the ladies turned to me and said she had lost 12 stones since joining.
“I knew at that moment if she could do it, so did I.”
She continued, “I went from being totally overwhelmed with nerves to being thrilled.
“I can’t describe it, I just knew this was it.”
By swapping sugary cereals and greasy takeaways for healthy porridge and homemade veggie lasagna, Beth lost half a stone in her first two weeks.
While the weight was steadily coming off, by Christmas she had lost an impressive two stones and wanted to share the gift of weight loss with her father.
“Dad had tried every fad diet under the sun,” explained Beth. But after years of losing weight and eating twice as much again, he had given up his diet.
“I had to keep nagging him and explain that Slimming World is not a diet, but a lifestyle.”
And Beth’s persistence paid off, with Pete joining his own local weight-loss group in January 2020.
“We went to different groups,” Beth explained. “But they were at the same time every week, and as soon as we left we got a call to discuss the meeting.
“From the start I noticed that Dad was very happy with how things were going.”
She continued, “He lost more weight than I did in his first week – he lost an impressive 12 pounds.”
With their weekly phone calls becoming the norm, they quickly exchanged recipe ideas, too.
“It really brought us closer than we have ever been,” said Beth. “We still constantly encourage each other to keep up the good work.”

She continued, “If one of us is down, we’ll have a chat and remind each other how far we’ve come.”
Both reached their target weights in September this year, Beth is now 14th 10lb size 16 and Pete 13st 6lb – losing an impressive 12 inches from his waist, which is now 33in.
Beth said, “For the first time in ten years, I finally feel comfortable in my own skin.”
She continued: “When Rio asks me to chase him, nothing beats the shocked look on his face now that Mommy can finally keep up.
“Instead of feeling out of breath after half a song, we can dance together in the living room all day long.
“I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be the mom Rio deserves.”
She continued, “I couldn’t say that if it wasn’t for my wonderful dad.”
And Pete, who has dropped seven inches off his neckline – from 22 inches to 15 inches – is equally grateful to his daughter.
He said, “No doubt I wouldn’t be here – eight stone lighter – if Beth wasn’t there.”
She continued: ‘I’m sure she won’t mind me saying she was an absolute nag, but it paid off.
“I feel 10 years younger.”
