Police in Mexico found 12 bodies in a truck – believed to be the victims of a deadly gang war between bickering drug cartels.
The bodies were discovered Saturday morning on a stretch of highway in the Huetamo region of Michoacán state in central Mexico, 450 km from the capital, Mexico City.
According to official reports, the unidentified victims were found in the back of a red pickup truck with number plates for the neighboring state of Guerrero.
They were piled up in the trunk of the van and hidden under a lid.
Their cause of death has not yet been released.
The truck had been reported stolen shortly before, and federal and state authorities believe the men were murdered as part of a drug war between cartels in the state of Guerrero, even though they were left in Michoacán.
Photos shown in Mexican media show the red pickup with a large blue tarpaulin covering the rear half.
The massacre is one of the deadliest massacres in Michoacán in recent months.
In recent days, videos of alleged torture and executions in the same area have been shared on social media.
There have been reports of clashes between members of the Jalisco New Generation cartel and the Michoacana family.
Both drug gangs are fighting over control of the area next to Guerrero because they want to dominate the cocaine and methamphetamine trade.
The Mexican Army and National Guard have launched a joint investigation to find those responsible, but no one has yet been arrested.
In a statement, the police in Michoacán said: “In cooperation with the Minister of Defense and the National Guard, we have strengthened operational actions in the municipality of Huetamo in view of the location of 12 bodies, on a highway section leading to the city of El Terrero Prieto. “
Such bloodthirsty tactics are nothing new in the Mexican drug wars.
In March 2018, the bodies of eight victims were found in a truck in Lázaro Cárdenas, a port city in the state of Michoacán.
The bodies all showed signs of torture and gunshot wounds, while the truck was covered in threatening graffiti.
Nobody was ever caught in the murder.
In January of this year, 10 musicians were burned alive in their vehicles after an ambush by a drug cartel in Guerrero.
The native men traveled in two vans when they were attacked by the gang members.
Daily Star Online has reported on the Mexican drug cartel hit group Los Antrax, loyal to former King El Chapo, who is dismembering their victims and keeping the bodies in freezers.
