A doctor allegedly shot and killed her own husband in front of their kids after he gave her a “look”.
Dr Kathleen Jourdan, 31, had been arguing with Joshua Jourdan, 35, while he was driving their pickup truck along a highway in Nebraska on June 17.
The family was driving along Interstate 80 back from Scottsbluff where they had been planning to move, the Lincoln Star Journal reports.
At some point during the disagreement Joshua reportedly pulled over on the side of the road and called a friend to help them sort it out.
During the phone call Joshua gave Kathleen “a look” and began raising his arm as if he was going to hit her, she told police.
In response she grabbed a handgun from the car’s console and shot him twice.
The couple’s two sons were sitting in the backseat.
Kathleen called the police herself and remained with the truck until state troopers arrived, who found Joshua dead in the driver’s seat.
She told authorities she had feared for both her life and the lives of her children.
She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon.
Both children have been placed in protective custody.
On Wednesday a judge set Kathleen’s bail at $1 million (£805,000) and told her if she is able to pay 10% of her bond, she will need to surrender her passport and remain in the state of Nebraska.
Kathleen is a resident physician at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program and has been placed on administrative leave since her arrest.
She graduated from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada in 2018.
After the shooting she told police she had suffered violence at the hands of her husband including sexual assault and both verbal and physical abuse, local media reports.
The investigation is ongoing and Kathleen’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 2.
