Doctors find giant 7kg hairball in teen's stomach after chewing hair for years

Doctors were left shocked after finding a hairball weighing 7kg inside a teenager’s abdomen, after she chewed hair for years.

The massive ball of hair was removed from the 17-year-old’s abdomen in eastern India’s Jharkhand state.

Sweety Kumari underwent the operation in Bokaro district on August 31.

A hairball weighing 15 lbs was retrieved from her abdomen after a six-hour-long operation.

Video footage shows a team of doctors operating on the girl and retrieving the massive entangled mass of hair from her abdomen.

According to local reports, a team of doctors led by Dr GN Sahu operated on the teenager at a private hospital in Bokaro.

Dr Sahu said that it was the first time in his 40-year career that he had witnessed such a massive accumulation of hair in the abdomen.

Almost three years ago, it was suspected that Kumari may have a tumour in her stomach following an ultrasound examination.

Doctors mentioned that the girl had a habit of chewing her hair for several years.

This led to the giant hairball accumulating inside her abdomen which laced the entire stomach.

Hair is not biodegradable so can accumulate in the stomach and form into a clump in people who habitually chew and swallow it.

Sources suggest Kumari is stable and will be released from the hospital following a preliminary observation.

Last year a 16-year-old had a large clump of hair removed from her stomach after spending a decade chewing her barnet.

The Russian teen suffered from Rapunzel syndrome, which sparked an addiction to ingesting her own tresses.

After battling this rare disorder for ten years, half a kilo of hair had gathered inside her body.

Doctors performed an emergency op to remove the giant mass – which posed a major threat to her health.

The patient sought treatment in the Siberian city of Tomsk.

Medics were stunned by the size of the hair ball, which took up 80% of the room in her stomach.
