Dodgers announce first 51 in player pool for preseason restart

The most unique season in major-league history made for some unique roster decisions.

The Dodgers’ announced the first 51 players in their 60-man ‘player pool’ Sunday afternoon. More players can be added but anyone removed from the list is ineligible for the 2020 season. Thirty will make the season-opening roster in approximately three weeks with that active roster cut to 28 after two weeks of play and 26 two weeks after that. A three-man ‘taxi squad’ will travel with the team for road games.

With no minor-league season expected to be played, most teams have chosen to add a number of top prospects to their player pool in anticipation of them being able to work out with the non-roster player pool at an alternate training site. The Dodgers plan to use facilities at USC and Rancho Cucamonga for that group.

The Dodgers’ roster announced Sunday includes all the players on their 40-man roster plus young prospects like pitchers Josiah Gray, Michael Grove and Marshall Kasowski, outfielders Zach Reks and Cody Thomas, catcher Diego Cartaya and infielder Omar Estevez.Sunday’s list included none of their 2020 draft picks though pitchers Bobby Miller and Landon Knack could be added later when their signings become official, allowing the Dodgers’ development staff to begin working with them despite the absence of a minor-league season.

“Our thought process in putting together the 60-man is trying to balance whether or not this might be the only reps that some of our prospects get this year,” Friedman said earlier this week.

“As deep as we are, as excited as we are about our 26 man 40 man, the prospects behind it — we don’t have 60 guys that we feel like could step in and help us win a major league game this year. So we’re going to train and make sure we balance depth and then figuring out which of our prospects either need reps or pitchers who could really use some increase in workload, and just try to balance them sure that we’re protected and covered, where we need to be, but also a really good experience for some of our prospects so we’re still working through that.”

The Dodgers are scheduled to hold their first workout in the resumed preseason training on Friday, July 3 at Dodger Stadium.
