Ducks owners order salary cuts for some staff, but no layoffs or furloughs

With the Ducks idled and the Honda Center empty, full-time employees of the team and its home arena have had little work to perform during the coronavirus outbreak that halted professional sports, concerts and other events around the globe in mid-March.

As a result, the salaries of some team and arena personnel will be cut by 20 to 25 percent for approximately the next six months, staff members were informed Monday in a letter from Henry and Susan Samueli, owners of the Ducks and Honda Center. There will be no layoffs or furloughs, however.

Employees earning $75,000 or more will have their pay cut, but those making less than that figure will retain their full salaries, according to a Ducks spokesman. The moves also apply to staff members of the San Diego Gulls, the Ducks’ AHL team, and The Rinks, including Great Park Ice.

There are nearly 500 full-time employees of the Ducks, Gulls, Honda Center and The Rinks.

The Samuelis announced April 2 that all part-time employees would continue to be paid through June 30, although that isn’t expected to be extended since the Ducks’ final regular-season games for 2019-20 will not be made up and no concerts are scheduled for the rest of the calendar year.

The Ducks had 11 games remaining, including five home dates, when the NHL suspended play March 12. The league plans to resume play for only the top 24 teams in the standings – 12 in each conference — at a date still to be determined. The Ducks were not among the top 24 teams.

The NHL hasn’t set a date for the 2020-21 season to begin, although it has been reported that commissioner Gary Bettman would like it to start with the Winter Classic game Jan. 1 at Target Field in Minneapolis. In that case, the Ducks would be sidelined for nine months before resuming play.
