A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake has hit Mexico, with reports of hundreds of people fleeing their homes for safety.
It is the joint strongest earthquake so far this year after a 7.7-magnitude tremor struck Jamaica in January.
The United States Geological Survey said a 7.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded nine kilometres west of El Coyul, in Oaxaca, Mexico, today.
It caused buildings to shake in central Mexico City, with city alarms alerting residents minutes before the tremors.
Journalist Andalusia Knoll said: “My heads still spinning from 7.1 earthquake felt across Mexico – epicenter in Oaxaca.
“One of our main fears during earthquakes in Mexico City are the power lines exploding – fortunately these didn’t fall down but they surely looked like they might.”
