Eight people die and six injured after wall collapses at construction site

At least eight people have been reported dead and six injured following the collapse of a wall.

The wall, which had been under construction crumbled in an industrial area in Jodhpur on Tuesday night.

Jodhpur District Magistrate Inderjeet Singh said that Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said: “CM has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakhs for the family of deceased and Rs 40000 for those critically injured.”

The compensation is equivalent to £2,032 for the family of those who have died, and £406 for families of those injured.

“The building collapsed where there was some metallic work was going on roof. 14 people were taken out from the debris.

“Eight people have died while six are critically injured,” Mr Singh told ANI.

He added: “The police has identified the owner and contractor. Strict action will be taken.”

Cops said a wall and the roof of a building caved in, leaving 20 labourers buried in the rubble, local news outlet thehindu reported.

The outlet also revealed victims were taken to Mathura Das Mathur Government Hospital and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Rescue teams scrambled to the scene and worked through the night, though the factory’s owner could not be contacted according to local reports.

Divisional Commissioner Samit Sharma was instructed to launch a probe into the incident.

Videos and images shared online show the horrific scenes covered in rubble with people rummaging through.
