Family flees car after huge sinkhole suddenly opens up in middle of the road

A family were forced to dramatically escape their car after a huge hole suddenly opened up on a busy road.

Witnesses say the front wheels of a Lada Largus collapsed into a giant pit that randomly appeared in Astrakhan, Russia.

The driver, a man, his wife, and mother-in-law, were forced to quickly escape through the back passenger door moments before the car fell further into the hole.

In a video shared online, the car can be seen half leaning in towards the hole before the bonnet completely disappeared below the surface into the sewer below.

The wheels of the car were left suspended in the air and shocked onlookers can be seen filming the sunken car in the street.

It has been reported the family visited the city from Kalmykia Republic with his daughter who is to begin studying at the city’s university.

The man’s mother-in-law suffered minor injuries and an ambulance was called, where she was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Regional Governor, Igor Babushkin, promised to compensate the driver in full for the damage and said the problem will be rectified as soon as possible.

Last week, a bizarre 160 feet deep hole appeared in northern Siberia, one of several to appear in the country in recent years.

The remarkable phenomenon was spotted by chance in late July when a TV crew flew over it on their way back from reporting an unrelated story.

Scientists believe the mysterious holes are a symptom of climate change, and occur as permafrost thaws.

Dr Evgeny Chuvilin, a leading researcher at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, told the Siberian Times : “What we saw today is striking in its size and grandeur.

“These are the colossal forces of nature that create such objects.”
