DOWN THE STRETCH

• Santa Anita track superintendent Dennis Moore, 71, has been in the business for 48 years and has seen the difference in the way his sport is covered. It doesn’t mean he likes what he’s seen. “With social media, a horse can go down and within five minutes it’s all over the country,” he said. “But people report it, and there’s circumstances. A horse breaking down is multi-factorial. There are a lot of factors involved. It might have got bumped, maybe slipped, it might have done this or that. There are all kinds of things that could go on.”

• Del Mar kicks off its seventh fall meet Saturday with the $75,000 Kathryn Crosby Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf, and racing secretary David Jerkens has seen an increase in interest from horsemen compared to the past. “I’d say around 400-425 (horses) a day will be stabled here,” Jerkens told Hank Wesch of Del Mar publicity. “That’s slightly higher than usual (300-350) and I take it as a good sign.” Ten trainers have moved their entire Santa Anita stable to Del Mar for the meet, including Philip D’Amato and Doug O’Neill.
