Foreign holidaymakers told UK is 'high risk' in tourism update

Foreign holidaymakers are being warned against travelling to the UK.

To help guide its citizens, the Czech Republic has divided Europe into colours based on Covid infection rates – and it doesn’t look good for the home nations.

This is despite the number of weekly deaths involving coronavirus in England and Wales falling by almost a third in a week and reaching its lowest level for seven weeks.

In their latest statement, the Department of Health confirmed 39,369 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK.

Sharing the graphic, BBC Newsnight policy editor Lewis Goodall said on Twitter: “The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs has divided

“From 15/06 Czechs can travel from green/orange countries without restriction.

“From red countries, however, Czechs will require tests. The only red countries are Sweden and the UK.”

The UK’s high death rate is pinned to the fact the coronavirus epidemic started in the country much earlier than scientists predicted, Professor Neil Ferguson has said, as he acknowledged care homes have been poorly protected.

Prof Ferguson, who dramatically quit as a Government adviser last month after it was revealed he allowed a woman he was seeing to visit his home during lockdown, said it was now clear hundreds if not thousands of people entered the UK in late February and early March even before the UK had got its surveillance systems set up.

In a frank admission to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, Professor Matt Keeling, of the University of Warwick, also suggested that modellers had “dropped the ball” with regards to how Covid-19 would spread through care homes.
