The Galaxy announced that midfielder Aleksandar has released Katai after his wife’s racist Instagram posts.
A report from Tea Katai was from an NYPD police cruiser who drove into a crowd of protesters with a caption in Serbian that translated “to kill those bits of strength.” The following showed a female demonstrator who walked away with a box of Nikes with the caption ‘Black Nikes Matter’.
The reports created an internet storm earlier this week when people all over the U.S. and the world took to the streets to protest racism and police brutality.
It also came just days after the Galaxy posted an informative Black Lives Matter link to anti-racism sources and organizations, including GoFundMe accounts to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, all of whom have recently been killed.
The club released a statement in late Wednesday condemning the reports, adding that the Galaxy is “vigorously against racism of any kind, including anything that suggests violence or attempts to undermine the efforts of those pursuing racial equality. . The LA Galaxy, with communities of color and especially the black community, protests and fights against systemic racism, social inequality, bigotry and violence. ”
Galaxy’s front office met with Katai on Thursday.
Katai, who is from Serbia, joined the Galaxy this season as a free agent signing for the Chicago Fire. He made his MLS debut in 2018 with the Fire, eventually making 43 appearances and scoring 10 goals.
He posted an apology on Instagram account, which was not well accepted by the fans. In the post, Katai said the posts were unacceptable, adding that “the views are not the views I share and are not tolerated in my family.”
On Thursday, a group of fans at Dignity Health Sports Park were shown with a sign saying “No racists in our club.” The number 7 – Katai’s shirt number – had been crossed out.
According to the MLS Player Association, Katai earned a guaranteed fee of $ 1,380,333.33 last season. The Galaxy signed him in the off season with targeted allocation money. His 2020 salary was not made public by the MLSPA.
On the football side, the move will keep the Galaxy short, as it focuses on returning to the game later this month. Katai was brought in to replace Romain Alessandrini, but should have played less than 60 minutes in one of the first two games of the regular season.
