Galaxy shuts out LAFC to kick off MLS restart

The first El Trafico meeting between the Galaxy and LAFC didn’t have any fans when they met in Orlando last month.

The fans were again absent Saturday as the scene shifted to the familiar confines of Banc of California Stadium.

The Galaxy, thanks to a first-half goal from Ethan Zubak and a second-half goal from Sebastian Lletget, quieted even the piped-in audio of the LAFC supporters for a 2-0 victory.

Zubak opened the scoring in the 26th minute, heading home a cross from Julian Araujo.

In the second half, Araujo again played a role in the goal, sending a quick pass from the right wing toward Sebastian Lletget, who was unmarked on the left. Lletget easily tapped the ball in for the Galaxy’s second goal.

LAFC welcomed Carlos Vela back to the lineup. The star forward and reigning league MVP missed the MLS is Back Tournament, choosing to stay home with his pregnant wife.

This was his first match since March 8. He was a non-factor in the first half.  In the 59th minute, his day was over as he limped off the field apparently suffering from cramps.

LAFC was without key midfield piece Eduard Atuesta, who is nursing a foot injury.

In that first meeting last month, LAFC used a dominant second half to defeat the Galaxy 6-2 at the MLS is Back Tournament.

In fact, in the last two meetings between the clubs, LAFC had scored 11 goals.

The teams are scheduled to meet for a third time Sept. 6 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.
