A 15-year-old girl was allegedly thrown off a balcony by three men after she rejected their advances.
The teen suffered serious injuries in the fall and is currently being treated in a hospital in Azamgarh in India’s Uttar Pradesh.
The incident took place on Friday when she was returning home, police have said. She was targeted by three men who allegedly began sexually harassing her.
After she turned down their advances the men became angry and forced the girl onto the terrace of a building before reportedly hurling her to the ground.
The victim told police she was beaten up before being pushed from the balcony.
Mau district police have arrested three men and a case has been registered against them after the girl’s family lodged a first information report (FIR).
Police officials have said the alleged perpetrators come from the same locality where the girl lives with her family.
“The girl has said she was also beaten up by the accused persons,” police officer Sushil Dhule said.
“The police have filed a case of assault and molestation based on the girl’s statement in which she has identified all three men by name.
“The girl’s family lodged a complaint and we have filed a case. All the three accused have been arrested.”
Police say more charges could be added to the case based on the findings from the girl’s medical report.
It’s the latest in a string of horrifying crimes against women reported in Uttar Pradesh as the government is accused of failing to ensure their safety.
Last month, a 19-year-old woman was dragged into a field and allegedly gang-raped by a group of higher-caste men in Hathras district.
Her family found her naked, bleeding and paralysed and she was rushed to hospital, where she died from her injuries.
The case caused international outrage and the state government has been widely criticised for how it handled the case.
