Girls orphaned as parents killed in head-on crash

Two girls aged one and ten have been orphaned after their parents died in a head-on crash.

The sisters were in the family’s Ford Focus when it collided with an Iveco Daily on the A412 in Cambridgeshire just after 8pm on Thursday night, September 3.

The couple, who died at the scene, were named by police as Bob and Paula Bateman, aged 36 and 34 respectively and from March in Cambridgeshire, reports CambridgshireLive.

Their daughters, Lexi, ten, and 18-month old Elizabeth, were taken to hospital but later discharged.

The van driver, from Lincoln, suffered minor injuries. He was later arrested on suspicion of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

He remained in custody today, Friday September 4.

A statement released by the family of the girls’ parents said: “We are utterly devastated by this news. Bob and Paula were much-loved friends to many and will be missed by everyone who knew them.

“They were also utterly devoted parents. Bob was a much-loved son and father, while Paula was a much-loved daughter, sister and mother.”

Anyone who saw the collision or the vehicles in the lead up to it, or has dash cam footage, is urged to contact police via web chat or by calling 101, quoting incident number 478 of September 3.
