GMB doctor reveals why face masks will be mandatory from July 24

Good Morning Britain’s Dr Sarah Javis has revealed the reason why Brits in England will have to wear face masks in shops from tomorrow, July 24.

Appearing on today’s episode, the medical expert – who is Dr Hilary Jones’ replacement for the summer – spoke with hosts Adil Ray and Ranvir Sing about the new law.

From Friday, July 24, it will be mandatory for Brits to wear face coverings when in shops and public spaces following PM Boris Johnson’s announcement last month.

Those who do not follow the new law risk facing a £100 from the police.

Shops have also been urged to contact the police on any customers who fail to comply.

Flouting the guidance will see fines reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days, and the law only applies to England currently, with devolved nations following their own paths.

While discussing the effectiveness of face masks, the 57-year-old then explained how the science behind such masks “has changed”.

Dr Sarah said: “Now, unless we are going to continue to stay more than two metres away from each other at all times and our economy is going to completely shut down, we are going to need to start getting back to normal now cases are dropping.

“And part of that means closer contact with other people. So that means face masks will help to protect – not you, but everybody around you from you – so yours protects mine, mine protects you.”

She added: “So that means if everybody wears them, they are protecting each other. Everybody protects each other. They are not protecting themselves, but they are protecting each other.

“But also, really importantly, the evidence has also changed. In the last two or three months, there has been evidence that the virus can spread before people are symptomatic and some evidence that it is not just coughing or sneezing.”
