These shocking photos show a prize pony – presumably inflicted by a homemade CROSSBOW.
Veterinarians initially assessed that Wedi had suffered an accident – for example, being kicked by another horse.
But it wasn’t until the animal’s condition deteriorated and she was taken to the hospital that a scan revealed the true nature of her injuries.
Despite a small cut on her head, the scan revealed a wooden object buried deep – some distance from the original entrance wound.
The police have now been informed and encourage everyone with information to contact us.
Both vets and officers told the owners – schoolboy John Howard, 11 and his family – that the object appeared to have been cut intentionally on one side.
They added that it looks like Wedi – officially known as Private Expresso – was injured by a homemade crossbow, spear or spear.
The pony was injured last month (April 18) in a field in Ross-on-Wye, Herefords.
Hannah Tolley, John’s sister-in-law, said, “After a risky but successful operation, the object was removed.
“It had entered the front of her head at the base of her ear, the only wound she had cut, and it had penetrated her neck.
“It was missing her brain and her main artery. The vet said she is lucky to be alive.
“In addition to the surgery site and access point, she had to have drainage incision holes made in her neck to drain the pus and gases from the dead tissue that had built up around the object, so she now has a large area of dead skin on her neck too.
“She is still in the very early stages of recovery and needs constant monitoring, it will be a very long way to recovery.
“Unfortunately, since there was no one at the time of the injury, we cannot be sure how it was contracted.
“John is an avid rider – he loves dressage and wants to go a long way. His idols are Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin.
“He hoped to continue dressage with Wedi before the injury came to a halt.”
