Heir to $5bn Getty fortune John Gilbert Getty found dead in hotel room aged 52

The heir to the £ 3.7 billion Getty oil fortune has passed away at the age of 52.

John Gilbert Getty, the grandson of oil magnate J Paul Getty, was found in a hotel room in San Antonio, Texas on Friday.

Tribute poured in for the musician, who leaves a daughter.

Mystery surrounds death, with the cause not yet made public, MirrorOnline reports.

However, according to reports, there is no question of foul play.

His death is the latest in a long line of tragedies to hit the family, whose fortune is estimated at $ 5 billion (£ 3.7 billion).

A spokesman for his father, the composer, Gordon Getty, announced the death and said he will be “deeply missed”.

The spokesman said: “With a heavy heart, Gordon Getty announces the death of his son, John Gilbert Getty.

John leaves behind his daughter, Ivy Getty, whom he loved immeasurably, and his brothers Peter and Billy.

His brother, Andrew, died of John.

John’s mom, Ann Gilbert Getty, graduated in September. John was a talented musician who loved rock ‘n roll.

“He will be greatly missed.”

The family once owned America’s greatest private wealth thanks to oil money.

John’s daughter Ivy shared a moving tribute to her father online.

She wrote on Instagram, “My dad was the coolest man to ever land on this planet and I will forever be the proudest daughter.

“I love you so much Dad … life is cruel sometimes … I have not one, but two guardian angels watching over me now …”

She shared some of her favorite photos of her dad in the online post.

His death is the latest in a series of tragedies and mysteries affecting the family.

John’s brother Andrew was found dead at his home in LA in 2014 after suffering from intestinal bleeding.

And his sister-in-law died of a heroin overdose.

J. Paul Getty was crowned America’s richest man by Forbes in 1957.

One of his grandsons, John Paul Getty III, was kidnapped in Rome in 1973 at the age of 16.

The kidnappers sent his mother a ransom note demanding about $ 17 million.

They later sent a letter from her son, begging, “Don’t let me be killed.”

But the ransom went unpaid and he said he was imprisoned for months in Calabria, Italy City and country magazine.

They later cut off his ear and eventually his grandfather agreed to pay the kidnappers, and he was rescued in December of that year.

John’s father Gordon helped facilitate the sale of his father’s company, Getty Oil, after the billionaire’s death in 1973.

Gigi Gaston, whose mother was the fifth wife of the late oil magnate, also mourned death.

She wrote on Facebook: “I just heard that my dear John Getty has passed away!

‘I love you, John! No birthday will ever be the same – not my life! I love you. Rest in peace.’
