One guy who saw his pit bull being “skinned” by a black bear from 25 stones acted out of instinct to save the pup, according to reports.
Kaleb Bentham, of Nevada County, California, said he heard an ominous growl outside his window.
He investigated and saw a huge bear with its jaws clamped to Buddy’s head – apparently trying to drag the rescue dog into the nearby forest.
Caleb says he immediately plunged into the fight and punched the bear in the face in the hope that he would release Buddy.
“I just ran down, plowed into the bear, took it and grabbed it by the throat and started hitting it in the face and eye until it let go,” he said.
He says he didn’t hesitate for a second. He told local news channel CBS13, “If it were your kid, what would you do? That’s my kid, I’d die for my dog.”
Fortunately, Caleb himself was not injured in the dramatic encounter. The bear, which Caleb said weighed about 350 pounds, let go of Buddy and left the yard.
Meanwhile, Buddy needed life-saving treatment at Mother Lode Veterinary Hospital. He underwent a three-hour procedure with stitches and staples on the side of his head and above the eyes.
One of the bear’s teeth went clean through Buddy’s lip, the dog lost part of an ear, and pieces of skin ripped off his head.
He’s recovering at home now, but is expected to have to wear a plastic cone for quite some time to keep from pulling out his stitches.
But Caleb says it’s the bear who is still prowling the area and might be eager to settle his unfinished business with Buddy: “He attacked and had his food and his food was taken from him and he wants it back to my feeling. “
