DOWN THE STRETCH

• Maxfield was considered a strong contender in last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile before suffering a minor ankle injury in the week leading up to the race. He has since been offside, but is scheduled to make his 3-year debut on Saturday in the $ 150,000 Grade III Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs. “I feel like we are all anticipating his next start since scratching the Breeders’ Cup,” trainer Brendan Walsh told Churchill Downs. “We always thought his best races were ahead of him. I thought his best races would be when he turned 3 years old or even in (2021). ”

• Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella is looking forward to trying to win Saturday’s $ 200,000 Grade II Charles Whittingham rings named after one of the greatest trainers ever. Mandella will saddle United in the 1 1/4 mile long peat event. “Whittingham was one of my heroes, but he was everyone’s hero,” Mandella told Ed An of Santa Anita. Mandella’s Barn 4 in Santa Anita is where Whittingham was until his death on April 20, 1999. “Charlie was always talking about a can filled with a peach recipe he buried in his shed, and only Molly knew where he was hiding it.” Mandella said, thinking of a favorite Whittingham story he liked to tell. “I dug up every foot of land there and can’t find the can.”

• The 3-year-old National Thoroughbred Racing Association remained the same this week: 1. Nadal (20 votes in first place), 2. Tiz the Law (17), 3. Charlatan (2), 4. Authentic (1), 5. King Guillermo, 6. Honor AP, 7. Sole Volante, 8. Ete Indien, 9. Maxfield, 10. Basin. Midnight Bisou topped the Top Thoroughbred Poll with 29 votes in first place, followed by Mucho Gusto, By My Standards (1), Zulu Alpha (1) and Ce Ce. Monomoy Girl returned to the rankings at number 8 after easily winning her comeback race last Saturday at Churchill Downs.
