Hostages are being held at gunpoint inside a bank and the entire ordeal is being livestreamed.
Up to 30 people, consisting of both employees and customers, are believed to have been taken hostage by at least one armed man inside the Gamsakhurdia Street branch of the Bank of Georgia in Zugdidi.
Local media is reporting that there may be multiple gunmen, but at least one has been spotted with a machine gun in a chilling livestream posted online.
The footage appears to have been filmed inside the bank itself by one of the hostage-takers.
Multiple people, both men and women and of a variety of ages, can be seen sitting on the floor next to the gunman. None of them appear to be tied up or harmed.
The hostage takers are demanding a ransom of $500,000 (£380,000) in exchange for the victims’ safety, Rustavi 2 reports.
Police and special forces are at the scene but have not yet commented on the unfolding situation. A yellow cordon has been placed around the area and heavily armed officers can be seen walking and squatting behind police cars.
Footage from local TV stations shows a number of people standing on the road outside the bank.
One man in a red shirt could be seen running from the building in a live news broadcast from Georgian TV station Mtavari Arkhi.
The broadcast, filmed through the building’s window, also shows several people lying on the floor of the bank while a man wearing camouflage clothing and holding a firearm walks around.
There are reports that just after one gunman entered the bank, an elderly woman managed to escape.
She later said that he fired a shot in the air and threatened to set off a grenade.
The police have reportedly managed to rescue several more people from inside the building.
