How to cut £199 from the price of the PlayStation 5

The new Sony PlayStation5 will be released in the next few weeks – ahead of the Christmas rush – with the actual date and price expected any day now.

Previous versions of the PS have launched in mid-November, so the PS5 is expected to follow suit.

And the next generation console, which should be on sale in time for Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas, is expected to sell for around £449.

But you could knock up to £199 off that with a simple trick. Price comparison site idealo.co.uk has looked into how people could save £199 on the console as millions of children will be adding it to their Christmas lists this year.

The digital version (the console without a disk tray) is said to be the cheaper option, however with games such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Gran Turismo 7 scheduled to coincide with the console release, the grand total could end up costing over £600, with games said to be priced at around £50 each.

With a built-in 4k Blu-ray player and 825GB SSD internal storage, PS5’s will be the ultimate media stations for any home, after Sony has confirmed they will be backwards compatible, meaning players can keep the majority of their PS4 games to play on the new console.

The PS4 is quickly becoming redundant to gamers, so now may be the time to sell it on early and generate cash towards the PS5 pre-orders. Although there has been no set date, Sony has leaked a potential exclusive pre-order system that could be starting in the next few months, so it’s time to start saving.

In good condition, trade-in retailers such as Game, CEX and Music Magpie offer at least £95 for a basic PS4, that’s the same as 21 per cent off a PS5 console. A 1TB PS4 Pro in good condition can be exchanged for a whopping £172.80 cash at Game, which is the same as 38 per cent towards a brand new PS5. Acting fast is essential, as a PS4’s value will drop dramatically the closer we get to the PS5 release date. See the table below for the different cash prices offered for PS4s with a variation of specs.
