Joe Biden proposed to wife Jill five times – tragic reason she kept saying no

US President-elect Joe Biden has had a long and varied political career – filled with success, scandals and tragedy.

Just after Biden had been elected Senator for Delaware in 1972, his 13-month-old daughter Naomi and first wife Neilia were killed in a car accident, while his sons were seriously injured.

Years later, in 2015, his son Beau, who survived the crash, died from a brain tumour.

Although his recovery from the trauma is still ongoing, Biden’s life has also been full of love.

But his story with his wife Jill isn’t one of love at first sight.

Three years after Biden tragically lost his first wife, his brother introduced him to Jill.

Biden wasn’t dressed to impressed when he went on the first date with the college student.

Jill told Vogue: “I was a senior, and I had been dating guys in jeans and clogs and T-shirts, he came to the door and had a sport coat and loafers, and I thought, ‘God, this is never going to work, not in a million years’.

“He was nine years older than I am!”

But all it took was one date to the cinema to change her mind.

After seeing the film A Man and a Woman, he shook her hand to say good night.

Jill added: “I went upstairs and called my mum at 1am and said, ‘Mom, I finally met a gentleman.’”

The gentleman was also clearly smitten, but he had to propose to Jill five times before she agreed.

But she had a very good reason for waiting.

Jill told Vogue: “I said, ‘Not yet. Not yet.

“Because by that time, of course, I had fallen in love with the boys, and I really felt that this marriage had to work.

“Because they had lost their mom, and I couldn’t have them lose another mother. So I had to be 100% sure.”

Eventually, Joe gave Jill an ultimatum, and said: “Look, this is the last time I’m asking you. I don’t care when we get married. But I want commitment.”

Jill said “okay”, and they went on to get married and have one daughter together, Ashley.

Jill and Joe tied the knot at the United Nations chapel in 1977, and had the reception lunch at Sign of the Dove in New York.
