Are the Denver Broncos going to kneel during the national anthem?
Jupa, stand-up guy
Kiz: Fearless forecast: Kneeling is going to be a thing again in the NFL during the 2020 season. The way I heard John Elway, he recently encouraged protest when he said: “The way the players amplify the voices that need to be heard is more important than ever. I fully support them using their platform and influence in a positive way to create change.”
Kiz, I’m not seeing you take the Kansas City Chiefs to task for the racist image of their name, in the manner of the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Indians. K.C. fans also incessantly do the war chant and tomahawk chop. Why do the Chiefs get a free pass?
John, Broncos Country
Kiz: I don’t like the tomahawk chop. Never have. Never will. It needs to go. But tell me the truth: Is your primary motivation here deep, abiding pursuit of social justice or jealousy that an AFC rival signed quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a lengthy contract extension?
Thank you for your column about the Rockies wearing masks to combat COVID-19. It honestly brought a tear to my eye, because some days I feel like I’m living in the Twilight Zone, and when I hear someone echo my thoughts it gives me a small measure of peace that maybe I’m not alone out here.
Sarah, good teammate
Kiz: In this nation’s battle against coronavirus, all we have to fear is stupidity itself. Let’s hope math and science prove to be more powerful than arrogance and ignorance.
I don’t have to wear a mask to be a patriot. I sure as (bleep) don’t need to ask a bunch of petulant overpaid children playing a child’s game about my patriotism if I choose to not wear a mask. If I need to check that, I’ll ask the veterans I served with.
Kiz: Do you believe in protecting your fellow soldiers, my friend? Way back in April, Navy Cmdr. Cameron Nelson issued this directive: “The Department of Defense urges individuals on DOD property, installations and facilities to wear cloth face coverings when a six-foot social distance cannot be maintained to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
The fact major-league baseball and the NBA are testing athletes almost every day to play sports, while regular people are waiting hours in line to take a test, should tell you everything you need to know.
E.P., impatiently waiting
Kiz: If NBA players get tests quicker than the rest of us, shouldn’t Nuggets center Nikola Jokic have felt some responsibility to wear a mask during his European vacation?
Maybe the NBA should move its bubble to rural Canada.
BSB, just trying to help
Kiz: I hear Saskatoon is beautiful this time of year. These days, the staff here at Kickin’ It Headquarters would feel safer holding its annual summer retreat in Saskatchewan than at Disney World.
And today’s parting shot attempts to goad me into the same rasslin’ ring where Sen. Josh Hawley and ESPN superstar Adrian Wojnarowski grapple for our entertainment.
You are insufferably smug, Kiz.
