England’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock is making a statement to the House of Commons after a surge in the number of positive cases of coronavirus in the UK.
Sky News has reported the Government will bring in new national lockdown rules – such as a crackdown on the number of people who can gather.
Local lockdowns have already been put in place across the north of England with various restrictions in parts of Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, Lancashire ad Leicestershire.
But the latest figures show 160 places with an increase in coronavirus cases over seven days – some three times as high week on week.
The Health Secretary’s announcement comes in the week school children have returned and as the Government urges people to stop working from home and get back to the workplace.
And it comes as more foreign locations are taken off safe travel lists across the UK.
Mr Hancock and senior medical figures in the UK have warned we must remain cautious now to prevent a resurgence of the disease.
Live updates will appear below as the announcement takes place.
