Live: PM addresses nation as 'tougher' tier 3 restrictions unveiled

The prime minister is addressing the nation tonight from 7 p.m., just hours after announcing ‘tighter’ tier 3 restrictions.

The country will be closed on Wednesday from 00:01, with reopening of gyms, shops and restaurants.

However, under the new levels, no areas in Level 3 will be able to dine, as all hospitality will remain closed – except for delivery and takeout.

Under the old Level 3 restrictions, restaurants could remain open.

The prime minister, still isolating himself, will remotely participate in the press conference, which is expected to take place around 7pm.

England’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty, and director of the Oxford vaccine group, Professor Andrew Pollard, will also be present at the press conference.

He told MPs earlier today that the national restrictions would end on December 2, but there could not be “free for all”.

Mr. Johnson also indicated that plans for what will happen for Christmas will be announced shortly.

Areas will be labeled from levels 1 to 3, but the new level system will be more difficult than before, as scientists said the old rules were not strict enough to stop the spread of the virus.
