A press conference in Downing Street will be held this afternoon after the UK becomes the first country in the world to approve the Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech.
The Prime Minister is expected to provide further details and answer questions in a televised briefing from No. 10.
Mr Johnson called the vaccine’s green light “fantastic” news and tweeted, “It is the protection of vaccines that will ultimately enable us to reclaim our lives and get the economy back on track.”
The injection has been shown in studies to be 95% effective and works in all age groups.
The UK has ordered 40 million doses of the vaccine, enough to vaccinate 20 million people with two doses, 21 days apart.
About 10 million doses are expected to be available for use in the UK for priority groups, including health professionals, in the coming weeks, with 800,000 doses arriving next week.
The press conference starts at 5:00 PM.
