Elite locust figures have been sent to deal with a biblical plague in Africa – as the terrifying insects prepare for another eating frenzy.
Israel has deployed Yoav Mortro, the country’s top grasshopper expert, and several others to deal with the swarm in Ethiopia.
They will target the desert locust, which has damaged vegetation, crops, pastures and forage.
Mr Mortro and his grasshopper crackers will use drones to keep an eye on the insects and spray them with chemicals at night while static, The times reports.
He said: “They hardly move at night and that is our time. We will use their weakness to our advantage in this fight against the grasshopper. It’s like a war. “
The team will also train more than 200 Ethiopians to use their technology in the fight against the locusts.
Ethiopia has already lost three million hectares of pastures and crops this year, and rain has increased insect numbers by 8,000.
Thousands of Ethiopians have also been displaced due to the outbreak of civil war between the government and the country’s northern Tigray region.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launched a military campaign against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on November 4.
On Tuesday, November 24, TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael told AFP news agency: “He doesn’t understand who we are.
“We are people of principle and ready to die in defense of our right to run our region.”
A spokesman for the Tigray Forces also said they had “completely destroyed” an army division.
However, the claim has not yet been verified due to a communication outage in the region, The Guardian reports.
More than 40,000 refugees have already crossed Sudan and the military has threatened a “no mercy” tank attack on TPLF leaders.
By mid-2020, one million people were already in need of emergency food aid in Ethiopia.
