Madeleine McCann murder suspect Christian Brueckner is now under investigation in connection with four child disappearances, according to reports.
Police in Belgium are trying to determine if there was a connection between the 43-year-old pedophile and the death of Carola Titze, who was only 16 when she was murdered.
Since being named as a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance in 2007, he has also been reportedly linked to the disappearance of six-year-old René Hasse in the Algarve in 1996 and five-year-old Inga Gehricke in 2015.
The mutilated body of Carola was found in sand dunes in De Haan, West Flanders, where she and her family were on vacation.
In the days before she was murdered, she had been to a disco with a mysterious German man who has never been located.
Mayor van de Haan, Wilfried Vandaele, responded to the latest investigation into the alleged murder of Madeleine VRT: “A shock wave went through our community when Carola Titze’s body was found in a forest in the dunes in 1996.
“Of course we also want the perpetrator to be found.
“Let’s hope the German investigation can provide more clarity.”
Carola died weeks after René disappeared while on vacation on Amoreiras Beach in the Algarve – less than 30 miles from Praia da Luz – in 1996.
That case is also reopened in light of the alleged breakthrough in the Madeleine investigation.
René was last seen running to the sea and since then only his clothes have been found.
Prosecutors are also reportedly looking at a fresh look at the kidnapping of five-year-old Inga Gehricke, who disappeared in 2015 at Wilhelmshof’s Diakoniewerk in Saxony-Anhalt.
Police raided Brueckner’s house in February of the following year hoping to find evidence linking him to Inga.
Although they could not prove his involvement at the time, they did discover a large number of child abuse images on a USB stick.
Birte Iliev, spokesman for the Stendal Public Prosecutor’s Office, confirmed that the case has been reopened.
He said, “We are now investigating whether there is any new evidence regarding the murder suspect in Braunschweig.”
Brueckner is serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz, close to where Madeleine disappeared.
Reportedly, a tip that 43-year-old Brueckner linked to Madeleine’s disappearance was not followed up for seven years.
Police in Braunschweig, Germany, received a tip about Brueckner in 2013 and reportedly forwarded it to the Federal Criminal Investigation Service.
But local reports say the tip was ignored.
Der Spiegel reported, “One person gave a tip about Brueckner, but the resulting report from the Braunschweig police to the federal detective was apparently not followed through, much to the dismay of the local detectives.”
Madeleine was kidnapped on May 3, 2007 from a room in the Ocean Club holiday complex in the area.
It is known that Brueckner lived in Praia da Luz between 1995 and 2007.
Hans Christian Wolters, spokesman for the Braunschweig Public Prosecutor’s Office, said: “In connection with the disappearance of three-year-old British girl Madeleine McCann on May 3, 2007, from an apartment complex in Praia da Luz, Portugal, the Braunschweig Prosecutor is investigating a 43 -year-old German on suspicion of murder.
“We assume the girl is dead.
“We’re talking to the suspect about a sexual predator who’s been convicted of crimes against little girls and is already serving a long sentence.”
He said the suspect regularly lived in the Algarve between 1995 and 2007, where he worked in gastronomy, but funded his lifestyle by committing crimes, including theft in hotel complexes and apartments, and drug deal.
He added, “The Braunschweig prosecution is now concerned because he last lived in Braunschweig before going abroad.”
