The terrified ex-girlfriend of Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner is now under police protection.
Nakscije Miftari, 25, is in a safehouse in the German city of Braunschweig. Police are watching her because she is a key witness in the case against her violent ex.
Officers fear she could flee the country or may be attacked by one of Brueckner’s accomplices.
Nakscije’s sister, mum-of-four Azra, said: “My sister is scared if Christian comes out now he could do her and us all harm… Christian always used to come over so nice to me.
“All of a sudden he changed and became very stressed. He and Nakscije went on vacation in 2014… When they came back she said ‘he hit me all the time’.”
Brueckner is in jail in Kiel serving a 21-month sentence for drug running.
Because he has served two-thirds of his sentence he is allowed to apply for parole but experts say this is “highly unlikely” to happen.
He has also been sentenced to seven years for the rape of a woman on the Algarve in 2005.
He is not serving that sentence at the moment because he is in the process of an appeal.
A court hearing today was told Brueckner is receiving “counselling” to deal with the media coverage and is now in solitary confinement to protect him from fellow prisoners.
