A 104-year-old woman is mourning the loss of her husband of 79 years four months after they were verified as the world’s oldest married couple.
Julio Mora, 110, died late on Thursday night in his sleep beside wife Waldramina Quinteros at their home in the Ecuadorian capital Quito.
The couple, who married on February 7 1941 after dating for seven years, have four surviving children, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Their eldest son died aged 58.
Their daughter Cecilia is reported to have discovered her dad dead when she went into their bedroom to check on them.
Julio, born March 10 1910, and Waldramina, born October 16 1915, were named in the Guinness Book of Records as both the world’s oldest married couple and oldest living married couple at the end of August following a verification in Quito dated June 23 2020.
Their aggregate age at the time of the verification was put at 214 years and 358 days and an article about their feat in the Guinness Book of Records in August flagged up the fact they predated the creation of television and Julio had been born before the Titanic sank in 1912.
They met through Waldramina’s sister’s husband, who was Julio’s cousin.
He is said to have wooed her with poetry.
The couple admitted in a recent interview they had it difficult at first because their families didn’t have a good relationship and objected to the marriage.
Waldramina said: “We never argue or fight.
“We’ve had disagreements but they were trivial things.
“It wasn’t easy at first because our families didn’t have a good relationship but with time and patience we were able to unite them and become a good example for younger generations.”
The couple were quoted at the time they were named as the world’s oldest married couple as saying:
“For us it is a source of great honour and pride to have a Guinness World Records title because it is the highest award that the world recognizes.”
“It is true that at this time it is difficult because we are overwhelmed by the pandemic that affects the world and we still do not have a solution.
“However, the first step is for us to follow the rules with respect and love life.”
Texas residents Charlotte and John Henderson held the previous record for the oldest married couple.
There are longer marriages the Guinness World Records is aware of, but none between people so old.
