A man who first met his biological father decided to recreate an iconic movie scene to “ break the ice ” of the first meeting – but things went a little wrong, given that his father had never seen the movie in question.
American father of two Doug Henning was excited to meet his biological father, Raul, for the first time ever and decided to dress up as Will Ferrell’s character, Buddy Hobbs, also known as “Buddy the Elf”, from the movie Eleven. 2003.
The 43-year-old arrived in full suit at Logan Airport in Boston, USA to meet his father – and burst into song.
The heartwarming moment was captured on film, showing Doug jumping up and down singing, “I’m here, with my dad, and we’ve never met, and I was adopted, but you never knew I was born used to be.
‘But now you’ve found me and you’re here, and guess what? I love you, I love you, I love you. ‘
The song is a quote from the Eleven movie – but Doug’s biological father had never looked at it.
The footage shows Raul looking a little perplexed as his long-lost son danced and sang for him, before hugging him at the end of the clip where he can be seen saying “my son, my boy” while the spectators cheered.
Doug admits he was afraid his dad would think he was ‘a madman’ after the stunt – which he was inspired to do after seeing Eleven days before meeting his dad for the first time.
Doug told Boston.com, “When he left the airport, he probably thought I was crazy.
“It was a really good way to break the ice. We ended up sitting down as a family and watching the movie.”
The father and son reached out after Doug linked to Raul through Ancestry.com’s family tree website.
Doug was born while Raul never knew he existed – but technology brought together the pair who reportedly had a connection with zooming during the pandemic.
He also has his own children, which means that Raul found out he had grandchildren he never knew either.
