The mayor of a Siberian city has dismissed reports that the annual Christmas ice rink looks like a penis.
The shape of the rink looks suspiciously like a piece of classic schoolboy graffiti – and the resemblance is supported by a Christmas tree emerging from its “point”.
Novosibirsk Mayor Anatoly Lokot says the somewhat crude-looking layout of the skating rink in Lenina Square is simply the most efficient form to make the most of the space while maximizing ‘fun’.
“Honestly, both this year and last year, the shape of the ice rink was the last thing on our mind,” he said, adding, “We thought about the area and maximizing the area that could be occupied by an ice rink to not to create crowds. “
Speaking to Russian news channel RIA Novosti, he explained that penis similarity is all in people’s minds, adding, “The infrastructure, alleys and paths are built that way,” he said.
As soon as ice appears, someone’s imagination starts to play. I rush to assume, no healthy imagination. Apparently they are thinking about something. “
The public ice rink, which lies in front of the Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theater, drew similar comments last year.
Anna Tereshkova, deputy mayor of Novosibirsk, rejected the criticism, wrote on Facebook that “real art should be exciting” and made it clear that the infamous ice rink would not be redesigned.
Local journalist Yuri Dud was one of the first to notice the awkward resemblance.
He posted an overhead photo of the rink on his Facebook page. He said the drone photo showed “what can be described as the power of Siberia.”
It has since been the butt of countless benign jokes on Russian social media, with dozens of commentators commenting on the unfortunate – and hilarious – resemblance.
