Miami downgrades ailing Tua Tagovailoa; Ryan Fitzpatrick likely to face Jets

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (1) talks to quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (14) during the closing seconds of a game against the Denver Broncos on Nov. 22.

MIAMI >> Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was downgraded to questionable for today’s game in the New York Jets, meaning veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will likely make his first start since October 18.

Tagovailoa hurt his throwing hand in practice on Wednesday and was limited in subsequent practices this week. The rookie status was lowered on Saturday, and Miami elevated the practice squad quarterback Reid Sinnett to the active squad to bolster depth on the position.

Fitzpatrick’s most recent start came in a 24-0 win over the Jets, one of his former teams, before being replaced by Tagovailoa in the starting line-up. Fitzpatrick came off the bench in the fourth quarter of last week’s loss at Denver when Tagovailoa was struggling.
