Mike Pompeo again blasts China over coronavirus ‘cover up’

WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo renewed his aggressive criticism of China on Wednesday about the way it treats the corona virus, saying it could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives and saved the world from an economic downturn if it had been more transparent.

Pompeo spoke to reporters and tried to derive questions about his Sunday comment. There was “considerable amount of evidence” that the new coronavirus emerged from a Chinese laboratory and statements from himself and other officials that it was not known whether the virus came from a laboratory, meat market, or elsewhere.

“They knew. China could have prevented the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people around the world,” said Pompeo. “China could have saved the world from a downturn in the global economic downturn. They had a choice, but instead – covered the outbreak in Wuhan. ”

Pompeo’s criticism was the latest example of President Donald Trump’s government who criticized China for treating the COVID-19 disease caused by the new coronavirus, which killed more than 255,000 people around the world, according to a Reuters report . Critics believe the government is trying to divert attention from what they see as a slow American response to the disease.

Pompeo’s remark on Sunday that there was “a considerable amount of evidence” that the new coronavirus originated from a Chinese laboratory was in contradiction to his own remarks last week and that of the top US general on Tuesday that it was still unknown where the coronavirus originated from.

“Just let me put this in bed. Your attempt to try … all your life trying to drive a wedge between senior US officials … it’s just not true, ” he told a reporter, sometimes speaking of her.

Each of those statements is completely consistent. All of them. Put them together, there is no separation. We all try to find the right answer. We are all trying to get clarity. Different levels of assurance are being assessed in different places, “he said. “We have no certainty and there is a lot of evidence that this comes from the laboratory. Both of these statements may be true.”
