A dad-of-four has been killed after a semi-truck lost control and ploughed into 11 vehicles on a highway.
The incident also left three other people in hospital when the horrendous crash happened at 5.40pm on Interstate 5 in south Sacramento, California.
Video captured by other passengers on the highway captures the horrifying moment the orange-topped truck swerved on the road and rear-ended a black BMW.
The truck does not appear to have slowed down as it hits a red Chrysler, which smashes and careens into other vehicles further along on the road.
A silver Ford SUV is seen toppling as the truck continues to make its way down.
Local media KCRA said the California Highway Patrol had to shut southbound Interstate 5 at Florin Road to allow officers to process and clear the scene afterwards.
Joel Broussard, 39, the driver of the red Chrysler, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The former mayoral candidate in the nearby city of Elk Grove had been driving home from work after wishing his mother, Irma, a happy birthday.
Irma said: “He ended the conversation like he always does. He says, ‘Alright, young lady. Love you. Alright, young lady. Love you!’ And that was at 5:17. At 5:40, my baby was gone.”
His wife, Angie, and their four children were left heartbroken when they learned of the devastating news.
Investigators indicated that alcohol and drugs were not a cause, but an investigation is underway.
The police investigating possible distracted driving.
Authorities interviewed witnesses and spent several hours completing reconstruction work at the crash site.
