Monomoy Girl, 2018 3-year-old filly champion who didn’t race last year, is scheduled to return to races on Saturday when Churchill Downs kicks off the 2020 spring rally with an 11-race program featuring 162 entries.
Monomoy Girl’s amazing 3-year season included victories in the Kentucky Oaks and Breeders’ Cup Distaff in Churchill Downs.
“It will take a long time, but we are very happy that (Monomoy Girl) is returning to the races,” trainer Brad Cox told Churchill. “She has been working great at Keeneland since the end of March and we look forward to this first step back.”
The $ 150,000 Grade III Los Alamitos Derby, scheduled for July 4, is among the races that will be part of a modified “Road to the Kentucky Derby” series, Churchill Downs announced this week. The Los Alamitos Derby is one of three races in Southern California that will be part of the Road to the Derby, which will also include the Santa Anita Derby on June 6 and the Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar. The Santa Anita Derby is worth 170 Derby qualification points, including 100 for first, 40 for second, 20 for third and 10 for fourth. The shared belief is worth 85 (50-20-10-5) and the Los Alamitos Derby 34 (20-8-4-2).
Bellafina, fresh from a disappointing fourth place finish at the Carousel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on April 25, returns to the $ 100,000 Grade III Desert Stormer Stakes for fillies and mares in Santa Anita on Sunday.
Bellafina loves Santa Anita and won four times by two seconds from six starts on the Arcadia circuit. “I think it’s just a race you have to draw a line through,” trainer Simon Callaghan told Santa Anita about the carousel. “Nothing really went well, but she came back and we know she loves Santa Anita.”
Bellafina finished just four times worse than third in 14 career races, all outside of Southern California.
