Most popular baby names of 2020 influenced by TV, BLM and memes

Lockdown changed everything in 2020, and the names parents have chosen to give their new babies are no different.

A new list of the top 100 baby names for boys and girls shows that the favorite girl’s name has changed for the first time in three years.

And one name dropped out of the girl’s top 100. Karen. Anyone who is not happy about that should ask the manager.

Parenting website BabyCentre has gathered the latest data to reveal the top 100 for boys and girls, reports The mirror.

Among the new names appearing on the list is Tiger. In that year we all watched Lockdown One watch Tiger King.

For years, Olivia was the most common name given out to girls, but now Sophia has knocked it to second place.

The name is Greek – meaning wisdom – something we all need a little bit in 2020.

Amelia comes in third

Mohammed remains the most popular name, followed by Noah and Oliver.

But there are also new names appearing on the list for the first time, with Ayaan, Ronnie, Rowan, Austin, Jasper, Hudson, Milo, Albert and Ellis all appearing on the boys list for the first time.

Lyla, Nora, Eliana, Margot, Zainab, Mabel, Aisha, Anaya, Madison, Talia, Delilah and Niamh were all new entries for the girls.

Connell first appeared in the registrations after the success of the Normal People series, but for Marianne there was no increase.

Another potential source of inspiration this year was the Black Lives Matter movement.

Rosa (Parks) and Martin (Luther King) both moved to the top 100 while Ruby (Bridges), the first black woman to attend a white school, rose four places to No. 22 and Malcolm (X) nearly doubled the number registrations. Activists Ella (Baker) climbed to number 11 while Blair (Imani), Nina (Simone) and Nelson (Mandela) all increased in the number of registrations.

The name Chadwick was also first recorded after the death of actor Chadwick Boseman, one of the movement’s true superheroes as the first black actor to star in a Marvel movie in Black Panther.

Sarah Redshaw, UK editor-in-chief for BabyCentre, said: “A global pandemic has made us look for ways to find optimism, reflected in an increase in positive and heroic names.

TV really showed its impact when the Connell name first appeared after the Normal People hero, played by Paul Mescal, dominated TV chat along with his chain.

And as we forcibly became the new go-out, we all turned to social channels to make ourselves feel part of a community, reflected in the increasing influence Insta stars have on us.

“With technology acting as a lifeline for work, staying in touch with our loved ones and keeping us busy, it remains to be seen if Zoom, Nintendo or Tik Tok will make it to next year’s list!”
